A club with a century of stories

Founded in 1922, we’ve called our log cabin clubhouse home since 1935. In November 2023 the clubhouse and lawns became the first croquet club on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Our history

  • 1922: The club forms, playing on a single lawn leased at Rushcutters Bay Park for £75 a year. Founder George Condon was also President of the Croquet Association of NSW.

  • 1928 to 1929: The name "Sydney Croquet Club" first appears, and the club leases a second lawn.

  • 1934: Building begins on two purpose-built lawns and the Log Cabin clubhouse in Woollahra Park.

  • 1935: Mayor Latimer opens the clubhouse on 27 April. The Rose Bowl Trophy dates from this year.

  • 1935 to 1950: The club wins eight A Grade and three B Grade NSW pennants.

  • 1959: The club becomes custodian of the NSW Croquet Association's trophies and equipment.

  • 1962 to 1984: A social club only, before re-joining what is now Croquet NSW in 1984.

  • 1984: The Mayor of Woollahra Handicap Competition begins.

  • 1989: The club becomes an Incorporated Association on 7 May.

  • 1995: The President's Cup is donated on the club's 60th anniversary at Woollahra.

  • 2003 to 2006: Golf Croquet competitions are introduced.

  • 2009 to 2012: Croquet NSW Golf Croquet pennants: Division 3 (2009) and Division 2 (2011 and 2012).

  • 2023: Clubhouse and lawns listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Our club today

We're a friendly, incorporated club of players of all ages and abilities. We still play for many of our historic trophies, including the Elston Cup for Club Champion, the President's Cup, the Dorothy Abernethy Trophy and the Woollahra Golf Club Competition.
